Designer of the Day | Rad Hourani

Great art has a cumulative effect. The impact of couturier Rad Hourani's designs intensify the more you look. He has a magician's ability to draw your attention. First to a major element, a cascade of angular folds or a peeled back reveal and then on to smaller details. Before you know it you've been looking at the design for much longer than you normally give to clothes. His status as the first "unisex" couturier may be giving him headlines right now but I say that's irrelevant. His designs attain the status of flattering on humans, all humans.

He does love to peel away fabric.

The layering of small angular fabric sections on top of base fabric is very, very tricky. It's extraordinarily difficult to avoid the sense that something has been "tacked on". Rad Hourani often succeeds in this dangerous space.

Fall '12 Couture
His designs have become increasingly subtle and refined.

Spring '13 Couture
He often uses multiple parallel lines to transfix.

His escalation to the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture has given his work a swagger which will only increase.
